Revelation 3:7-13

The letter to the church in Philadelphia (which means "brotherly love") was suffering. This church was being persecuted and that should be an encouragement to us. It should not be so because of their persecution, but because they survived. We must stand firm to the end. Many of us wane and wilt with the weight of the world – but we must stay strong and persevere in the manner that Christ did. We will overcome – not in our own strength – through Christ alone! Overcome, and be encouraged today. I am praying for you all that you would be faithful to God's word this week and spend time with Him.

Revelation 1:1-8

I read verses 1-3 and I would paraphrase them as this: Jesus came and lived and will come again – as shown to John, His servant – that we as a church might live bigger lives and fulfill His promises to this planet. I cannot stand it when I am not in direct service to God – and wish I could do it more (like during sleep, etc) and I think this is a weird thing for some people to hear or read. However, I believe that nearly every portion of my life is service to Him – my relationship to my family and my friends, my job, my schooling, even my driving if I am being conscience of Him and spending time with Him. Therefore there is very little I am not doing to serve Him. Verse 6 tells me that we should all have this attitude. We as a church should live out life to be a blessing to others.

I am blessed and broken by Christ's goodness to me. I think the biggest things out of verses 7 and 8 to me are that people will mourn Jesus' coming again. I don't understand this, until I realize that so many are hostile towards Him now. They are angry at Him for so much and wish He weren't real. I think this passage suggests that won't change. While I might not understand why they wouldn't just repent and turn to Him, I have to remember that I know Him personally and want nothing more than an eternity in His presence. This does not make sense to most, but needs to become our reality as a church. If Jesus is the Alpha and Omega, He needs to be praised, both now and in the future.
