In the movie “Surf’s Up,” which happens to be one of Eden’s favorites, one of the main characters – Geek – is a hermit penguin that lives in a hut in the jungle.  His niece, Lani (Zooey Deschanel), brings him Cody Maverick (Shia Labeouf) – a surfer who just bit it hard and looks up to a deceased penguin surfer named Zeke “Big Z” Topanga.  Cody needs help, and Lani knows that Geek can help him.  Little does Cody know ***spoiler alert*** that Geek is Big Z and is hiding from the world.  One of the subplots of the movie is Cody trying to get Big Z back out there – into the action – out on a board – to show the world what it is missing.  There is an element in this Psalm that can be felt throughout the Psalter (a fancy word for the collection of Psalms).  Can you feel/hear/see it in verses 19+20?  Rise up, Lord, and show the world that it is foolish!  Rise up and show the world that you are who you are!  Have you ever felt this way?  You might ask, “God, this whole ‘evangelism’ thing and this whole ‘trusting You’ thing would be a lot easier for the world if you would just show yourself, wouldn’t it?”  You, like Cody Maverick, want the being you marvel at to show the world he exists.  However, unlike Cody Maverick’s hero, your God is not a bum hiding in the woods – He is living and active and has been throughout time and space.  However, not everyone wants to see it… therein lies the problem.  David, like you or I, want God to come out and show the world that He is real and is who He says He is.  Yet, so often, He feels distant and silent in this broken place and in our broken hearts/lives.  Brokenness leads to that distant feeling – and one day we will experience Him more fully than any “real” thing we experience here.
It is these acts of God that His followers experience that seems to lead to the writing of this Psalm – check verses 1 and 2.  Another interesting thing about this Psalm is that it is written as a small acrostic (the letters aleph to kaph are used as the opening markers for every section of this Psalm).  See if you can see where they each appear (a, b, g, h, w, z, j, f, y, k).  They will start off the line they are being used in (and verse markers don’t necessarily make the distinctions).  Good luck!
